In August 2008, after a predator believed to be a leopard attacked livestock on the Langklaas Islands, the Eksteenskuil Co-operative requested assistance from the Department of Nature Conservation. With the community’s support, they set a cage, and the leopard was safely captured in September 2008. Its presence surprised residents because Eksteenskuil is an intensively farmed and relatively densely populated area. Instead of hunting the animal, farmers worked with conservation officials to relocate it to a nature reserve. This memorable event demonstrated the community’s respect for wildlife and highlighted the remarkable adaptability of leopards living along the Green Kalahari and Lower Orange River.
